RIO TUBA NICKEL MINES
Rio Tuba Nickel Mines
Clenergen and Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTNMC) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to do feasibility studies for installing biomass power plants up to 34MW electricity generation capacity, at certain of Rio Tuba's mining operations in the Philippines. It is proposed that the project will start with the installation of a demonstration 2 MWe biomass gasification power plant in Palawan.
Rio tuba has mining-rights on more than 5,000 hectares of land and is committed to engage in renewable energy projects which will have positive impacts on the environment and surrounding communities and that will remediate lands that have been mined. The wood chip fuel for this plant will be supplied from a proprietary Clenergen bamboo energy crop plantation, to be established on 400 acres of mined-out Rio Tuba land that is earmarked for rehabilitation.
Under the MOA, Rio Tuba will enter into a long term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Clenergen for the supply of renewable electricity at a fixed rate per KW/h, subject to annual inflation adjustments. This will significantly reduce the cost of Rio Tuba’s electricity that is currently supplied by diesel-powered generators.
